In the shadows of Helmut Newton, Spring Street
Melbourne (Conte de printemps 2017)
Brent Lukey

Melbourne is justifiably proud of it’s association with fashion photographer Helmut Newton, one of so many young European photographers, artists, designers and craftspeople who fled Germany before World War 2. Helmut along with Henry Talbot, Bruno Benini, Mark Strizic, Wolfgang Sievers and others photographed Melbourne in ways that we still emulate today – the facades, the street, the style, people and of course Melbourne’s love of fashion. Look these photographers up – their work is incredible and inspirational, and need I remind you they are working with film. Ultimately Melbourne was too small for Helmut, he had bigger dreams, and if you read his autobiography he probably desired more women than small town Melbourne had to offer.
